Back in August 2003 as part of Conservation Week there was a nostalgic walking tour around the grand old cinema's of Christchurch. It was nice to have a look around inside them, and to hear about their past from the tour guides and ex-staff who attended. It got me thinking that there should be a web page about local cinemas as a record of the history of these buildings.... so here it is.

I took a few pictures on the walk and I've used these as a starting point for the site. Hugh R. R. Taylor has graciously allowed me to use the information from his List of Christchurch City, Suburban, and District Picture Theatres. I also tracked down my old copy of a very informative pamphlet about local cinema produced back in 1986 by Robert Lewis Jackson and the New Zealand Film Archive. From these I have put together a list of cinemas that have operated in town. If I can contact Robert I'll be asking if I can use more of the information he collected.

The pages for most of the cinemas have the basic details about the cinemas, but over time they will hopefully develop into a galley with pictures of each theatre and more information about their operation, so keep checking in and I would love to hear from you if you have any information or photographs relating to the cinemas listed here.
